Wakeup Big Tobacco

Bonnie Herzog, an analyst with Wells Fargo Securities, has said “e-cigs are to tobacco what energy drinks are to beverages. There are projections of $1 billion in annual sales within a few years, Herzog said, in part because there are no federal or state excise taxes on the products.

“E-cigs are profitable, growing quickly, gaining shelf space and consumer acceptance; therefore e-cigs are an important new niche category for retailers,” she said.

Reynolds American Inc. (RAI), the second-biggest U.S. tobacco maker, has developed a “digital cigarette” using computer chips to replicate smoking a cigarette, Chief Executive Officer Daniel Delen said on a conference call last month.

“We’re looking to make a big splash in the category” with a product made in the U.S. using patented technology to “make sure you get a cigarette experience,” Delen said.

“If manufacturers can create something that tastes, looks, feels and smokes like a traditional cigarette with substantially less risk or harm, more consumers are going to try them and retailers are going to give them more shelf space.”

New synthetic nicotine could tumble big tobacco

When test group after test group of long term smokers found out that for the last 10 weeks they have been nicotine free…most could not believe it. Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical substance that is derived from certain specific plants belonging to the flowering nightshade plant family named Solanaceae which acts as a stimulant in tobacco containing products such as cigarettes, chews, cigars and snuff. It may also be found in small quantities in eggplants, tomatoes, potatoes and green peppers but the tobacco plant is the nicotine king…until now.

Imaging being able to smoke any substance you want from flower petals to herbs and all you have to do to make it perform like a nicotine delivery device (cigarette) is spray a little totally synthetic nicotine (TSN) fluid on the rolling material and your nicotine addiction is satisfied, even with your homemade smoke. So say the folks at Natural Tobacco Additives, (NTAwebsite.com) who developed this pure organic nicotine confuser. How it works The metabolites of nicotine that accumulated in the body fluids are: nicotine isomethonium ion, nicotine glucuronide, nornicotine, nicotine N’-oxide, 2-hydroxynicotine and cotinine. Among these, cotinine is the major metabolite affecting the body by giving rise to unpleasant withdrawal symptoms which make it the hardest of addictions to get rid of. Usually a cigarette is found to contain around 1 mg of nicotine which means that just a pack of cigarette contains around 20 mg of nicotine, enough to cause great harm to the body of a chain smoker by its excess accumulation.

The totally synthetic nicotine (TSN) replicates the effect of nicotine but with far less addictive properties. Quitting TSN smoking blends has also been tested and results demonstrate a significant lower stress level from test groups trying to stop tobacco smoking vs. TSN smoker trying to quit. More about the tests and participants Full flavor cigarette smokers for over 10 years 60% men with average age: 37 All test groups did have to follow a nicotine removal lifestyle which included: •Drinking at least 4 glasses of water per day as it facilitates the process of detoxification including the flushing out of the nicotine substances by the pacing up of the metabolic activities in the body. •Secondly, eating fruits containing Vitamin C, an efficient antioxidant which helps the body to get rid of toxins by metabolizing the drugs and flushing them out of the body. •Thirdly, participate in regular physical activities and exercise which also helps the body to get rid of harmful products and helps to keep the body fit and healthy.

New Electronic cigarettes and smoke blends convert to TSN over Nicotine Natural Tobacco Additives also manufactures e-juice for electronic cigarettes featuring TSN. With the growing popularity of electronic cigarettes, NTA will offer TSN non-nicotine replacement e-cigs in early February 2013, in advance of national distribution of the Hampton Smoking Blend, the first non-tobacco smoking blend featuring TSN.

British American Tobacco In E-Cigarettes Deal

BAT is poised to buy a company which develops products that provide less risky alternatives to smoking, Sky News learns.10:26am UK, Wednesday 19 December 2012
British American Tobacco is the UK's largest tobacco company

By Mark Kleinman, City Editor
Britain's biggest tobacco company is poised to swoop on a pioneer of some of the world's biggest-selling electric cigarette brands, a vital new frontier in an industry buffeted by growing restrictions on its sales and marketing practices.

I have learned that British American Tobacco (BAT) will announce today the acquisition of CN Creative, a Manchester-based company which specialises in the development and production of non-combustible cigarettes.

The takeover is believed to be costing BAT tens of millions of pounds, but insiders say the purchase will be of potentially far-reaching strategic importance to the group.

I understand that the deal will involve CN being acquired by BAT rather than Nicoventures, a BAT subsidiary which was set up last year to focus on what it called "the development and commercialisation of innovative regulatory approved nicotine products".

Talks between BAT and CN Creative are understood to have been taking place for several months.

CN is one of a small number of companies to have benefited from the Government's £200m Future Technologies Fund, which was set up by the last Labour administration to give British companies a stronger foothold in life sciences.

Among the Manchester-based company's products is Intellicig, which it claims is the world’s best e-cigarette, selling in 26 countries around the world, including in the UK.

CN Creative also manufactures ECOpure, a nicotine-based product, and is developing a new generation of products under the name Nicadex that the company says "will exist under the medicines regulatory framework as a smoking cessation device/drug".

CN Creative is chaired by Dale Pfost, a partner at Advent Life Sciences, one of the company’s investors. The company's founders are likely to make a substantial multimillion pound sum from the takeover by BAT.

The tobacco industry's biggest players are seeking to develop credible products which provide alternatives to smoking at a time when pressure on major companies is unrelenting.

New European Union proposals to put graphic images warning of the dangers of smoking have faced intense lobbying from the industry but are widely-viewed as inevitable.

BAT is run by Nicandro Durante, an Italian, who replaced long-serving chief executive Paul Adams two years ago.

The company declined to comment on the CN Creative deal

METRO Electronic Cigarette gains distribution in Love’s Travel Stops

The electronic cigarette market has proven to be a climbing success for retailers around the country. Many brands are still rising while others are starting to fade out. The continued success of electronic cigarettes makes retailers certain that e-cigs are a product that needs to be stocked on the shelves. However, the multitudes of brands emerging make it difficult for retailers to choose a long-term, profitable brand. This is why METRO® Electronic Cigarette is proud to have been chosen as a primary new e-cigarette brand for Love’s® Travel Stops chain of stores.

METRO’s products launched into over 230 Love’s stores nationwide this month and are scheduled to be fully stocked in all stores no later than Christmas of 2012. Products will include E-cig Designer Packs, E-cig Starter Kits, E-Cig Replacement Cartridges, One Time Use E-cigs and a 2-Way Charger.

“This new partnership with Love’s is a very exciting one for us at METRO. Love’s is a long-standing icon and leader in the truck stop industry, and we are elated to welcome them as our newest retail partner,” says Greg Doyle, Chief Operating Officer for METRO Electronic Cigarette.

“It was not an overnight decision to bring in a new brand of e-cigs. However, with METRO’s proven track record of increasing sales and customer satisfaction coupled with their strong merchandising and quality of product, we felt bringing in METRO’s e-cigs was a great decision for both Love’s Travel Stops and the consumer,” says Mark Romig, the director of merchandising for Love’s Travel Stops.

This new partnership with Love’s further increases the strong market presence that loyal METRO customers currently enjoy.

About METRO Electronic Cigarettes: METRO Electronic Cigarette offers quality and affordable e-cig disposables, starter kits, build your own kits, cartridges and more. With over four years’ experience in the electronic cigarette industry, METRO provides a product that meets every “vapor’s” needs. Flawed Logic in Latest Nicotine Study
American Legacy Foundation claims majority supports reducing nicotine in cigarettes
By Melissa Vonder Haar

Tobacco E-News WASHINGTON & BOSTON -- Last week, The American Journal of Public Health released a study suggesting a majority of Americans would support a federal mandate to lower the amount of nicotine in cigarettes. Conducted in June of 2010 by the Washington-based Schroeder Institute (a part of the American Legacy Foundation), the survey found that 46.7% of adults agreed the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) should act on the issue.

"This data could be helpful to FDA in gauging public sentiment and tailoring its messaging if the agency chooses to move forward with such regulation," said the study's lead author Dr. Jennifer Pearson, research investigator for the Schroeder Institute. "This study shows us that such measures could be acceptable to a large number of Americans."

However, the survey results didn't actually show a majority of Americans support lowering nicotine in cigarettes. While 46.7% of respondent were in favor of such a move, the majority actually opposed or had no opinion on the subject (16.5% opposed, 37.8% neither agreed nor disagreed).

In fact Dr. Michael Siegel, a professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Boston University of Public Health, found several red flags in the Legacy study, including the notion that public opinion should factor into the FDA's regulatory process.

"The FDA should be making decisions about regulating products based on scientific analysis and policy considerations," Siegel told Tobacco E-News. "Would it be relevant to ascertain and discuss what percentage of the public believes that the FDA should ban Vioxx, require a black box warning on Chantix or approve a certain drug for use? This is a scientific and policy matter, not an issue of public opinion."

Another issue is whether reducing the amount on nicotine would actually be effective. "It is not clear that lowering the levels of nicotine will have a positive effect on the public's health," said Siegel.

And while Pearson claims "nicotine reduction could be a promising tool to protect the population from the harm and death caused by tobacco products," Siegel said he believes it could actually have the reverse effect. Because the FDA only has the authority to lower the amount on nicotine in cigarettes (as opposed to ban it all together), Siegel said lowering nicotine "could actually backfire if it triggers compensatory smoking and causes smokers to smoke more."

GARFIELD, N.J. -- Rechargeable electronic cigarette brand Eonsmoke LLC has announced the Brand X-Change program. Customers of other e-cigarette brands can ship their starter kits to Eonsmoke headquarters for a free Eonsmoke economy kit.

"Eonsmoke is proud to service any people out there that are unhappy with their current electric cigarette brand," said Zeeshan Naim, vice president of Eonsmoke. "This is the official launch of the program which has been in beta the last few months. We've already had thousands of smokers that have switched to Eonsmoke electric cigarettes from other brands with our Brand X-Change program. Shipments should contain a working e-cig and a letter specifying why that customer was dissatisfied with the product."

Eonsmoke rechargeable e-cigarettes provide a smoking experience with 15 flavors including Apple, Mango, Mojito and Strawberry. The e-cigarette brand also offers traditional tobacco flavors that provide smokers with an experience rivaling ordinary cigarettes. In addition, each of Eonsmoke's distinctive flavors are available in five different nicotine levels including zero nicotine to meet the needs of even the most discerning consumers.

"Electronic cigarettes have expanded into mainstream America literally over the last two years. Eonsmoke particularly has gained recognizable territory within the convenience store channels, and now we're in over 7,000 stores in the United States," said Ethgar Rios, senior vice president of Eonsmoke. "We welcome any current smoker to try Eonsmoke through our new Brand X-Change Program."

Garfield, N.J.-based Eonsmoke designs, markets and distributes e-cigarettes and accessories. The company's trademarked e-cigarettes are devices that vaporize a liquid solution. The company offers its products, e-cigarettes and accessories under the Eonsmoke, Spirit Vapor and Miami Cigs brand names. Eonsmoke LLC sells its e-cigarettes and other products through distributors and wholesalers, as well as directly to consumers through its websites and mobile applications

Do electronic cigarettes really work?

Manufacturers say the technology saves lives, but the FDA is still on the fence
By Ben Feuerherd, The Fix

(This article originally appeared on The Fix.)

Smoking without the health risks may sound like a pipe dream for many smokers; but this is just what makers of electronic cigarettes (or “e-cigs”) promise their consumers. E-cigarettes are battery-operated products, often resembling cigarettes, that turn nicotine and/or other chemicals into a vapor that users inhale. Companies like LOGIC E-Cigarettes use aggressive marketing tactics, like street campaigns and taxi cab ads, to push their products as an easy, safe alternative to smoking. Although these companies are profit-driven, they also claim to have the public’s interest at heart. “This is the 21st century. The public deserves an alternative to smoking,” Eli Alelov, CEO of LOGIC, tells The Fix. Alelov says that his products emulate the experience of smoking a cigarette—the motion of smoking, the oral fixation and the inhaling—but without tobacco, tar or “4,000 other chemicals in cigarettes.” A nicotine addict himself, he lost his father to lung cancer at the age of eight; he believes e-cigarettes are a way to “save hundreds of thousands of lives every year.” Alelov is urging the US government to back e-cigarettes as an alternative to “poisonous” tobacco, “which the American government now benefits from tax-wise.”

But the FDA remains dubious about the safety of e-cigarettes, and it may start regulating them like tobacco products. Jennifer Haliski, an FDA spokesperson, points out that the devices do contain “highly addictive” nicotine, and may include other potentially dangerous chemicals as well. “The FDA intends to propose a regulation that would extend the agency’s ‘tobacco product’ authorities—which currently only apply to cigarettes, cigarette tobacco, roll-your-own tobacco and smokeless tobacco—to other categories of products that meet the statutory definition of ‘tobacco product,’” Haliski tells us. “Further research is needed to assess the potential public health benefits and risks of electronic cigarettes and other novel tobacco products.”

Smokers are divided on whether e-cigs are a worthy or helpful alternative to tobacco cigarettes. “I’d rather smoke cigarettes, even though I know it’s bad for me,” Dan, 24, tells The Fix. After trying out an e-cigarette to help him kick a four-year habit, he says, “It’s not as satisfying as the real thing.” But others say the new technology is a lifesaver, with some added perks—for example, since the devices emit vapor, not smoke, they bypass most smoking regulations. “You can smoke inside!” says Olivia, a 28-year-old executive assistant. “I puff away at my desk all day. It’s just like Mad Men.“
